Biography of Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi. All events and principles of Gandhi’s life and thought are viewed as integrated parts of his truth-intoxicated life depicting permanent and universal values. The purpose of the film is to tell the present and the future generations “that such a man as Gandhi in flesh and blood walked upon this earth”, to acquaint them with his life and work and to spread his message of peace and universal brotherhood to the war-weary and fear-stricken world. The film brings together a mass of visual record not only of 78-year life of Gandhi but also of an important period of India’s history. The aim of the film being education and not entertainment, there is no attempt at dramatization of those exciting times. The story is told with an eye to truthful documentation of the main events within the limits of available documentary visual material.

Riding Giants is more than another blissfulsurfing movie. It’s an outstanding documentary about one era in American alternative lifestyles, when surfing was well-suited to a radical culture of social dropouts. Using an amazing array of amateur film clips, shot for the most part in Hawaii and California from the late 1950s and early ’60s, director Stacy Peralta traces the rise of surfing’s appeal to young men looking to test themselves in an unorthodox (and sexy) milieu–of “living life to the fullest,” as former surfer-turned-screenwriter John Milius (Big Wednesday) puts it at one point. Lengthy chapters on the glories of Oahu’s Makaha and the “superstition and dread” that accompanied the big-wave challenge of Waimea Bay are riveting and sometimes heroic, particularly told through the memories of surf legend Greg Noll. Great material, too, about the deadly wonders of surfing Mavericks, California, where the rocks will get one if the violent tides don’t.

In 1985, two adventurous young mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, set off to climb the treacherous west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. They were experienced climbers, and climbed “Alpine-style,” climbing the mountain in “one great push,” without setting up ropes or base camps ahead of time. After dealing with a snowstorm and some dangerous climbing over powder formations, they reached the summit (about 21,000 feet) on the third day. The climb down proved to be far more difficult. Simpson fell and broke his leg badly. Yates decided to try to lower Simpson down the mountain, one 300-foot section of rope at a time. The climbers had run out of gas to melt snow, so they couldn’t risk stopping as night came, and a violent snowstorm began. Their plodding, painful journey hit a snag when Yates inadvertently lowered Simpson over the edge of a cliff.

In the storm, the men couldn’t hear each other’s cries, and, Yates, uncertain as to Simpson’s position, and gradually sliding down the slope himself, decided to cut the rope that connected them, sending Simpson plummeting to certain death. Miraculously, Simpson survived the fall, and was faced with the prospect of getting off the mountain alone with no food, no water, and a broken leg.

In Touching the Void, filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September) tells their story, based on Simpson’s book, using contemporary interviews with the two men, and a reenactment of their climb and descent, featuring Brendan Mackey as Simpson and Nicholas Aaron as Yates. Touching the Void was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival.

Director Aleksandar Manic’s The Shutka Book of Records was filmed in the biggest predominantly Roma settlement in the Balkans. Sutka, or Suto Orizari, near Skopje, was originally set up by homeless families following the earthquake that devastated the former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia in 1963. The film introduces a number of lively local characters, all of whom claim to be champions of some bizarre discipline, be it exorcising evil genies, spending the biggest amount of money on a circumcision party, training ganders to fight, or collecting old Turkish music on audio tapes.

This well-crafted and entertaining film is the latest addition to a rich and enduring tradition of cinema about the Roma of this region, the best-known among them directed by Emir Kusturica. Time of the Gypsies (1988) became a major art-house hit, and its sequence featuring the ritual collective river bathing on St. George’s Day is analyzed at length at film schools across the globe. In Black Cat, White Cat (1998) Kusturica abandons the magic realism characterizing his previous films for a more cartoonish and farcical feel. This style is a world away from Western logic and norms, yet it is rich in composite allegory, such as the recurring image of a pig munching on an old Trabant car. Kusturica’s homeland critics attacked him for romanticizing and mainstreaming a marginal culture, instead of representing the urban, European aspects of Serbian society. He is drawn to Roma primarily for its people who are economically and culturally distinct from the dominant order–the same fascination that inspired the earlier masterpieces of “Gypsy cinema,” like Aleksandar Petrovic’s I Even Met Happy Gypsies (Skupljaci perja, 1967) and Emil Loteanu’s Gypsies are Found Near Heaven (Tabor ukhodit v nebo, 1975). Manic, who made a documentary on the set of Kusturica’s Underground, enlisted Bajram Severdzan from Black Cat to act as the guide through the weird world of Shutka.

Local music is an essential ingredient of these films. The emotional impact of the brass music of the Balkan Roma owes a lot to a strange and intoxicating combination of the thunderous rhythms full of joyful energy and the concurrent supremely melancholic melodies that accompany them. There may be a cinematic analogy to this, exemplified by an odd common thread underlining the documentaries that deal with the social issues facing the Roma in this part of the world. While their subject matter is about extreme deprivation, grief, and injustice, their tone is distinctly comical. This also applies to other recent films by Serbian filmmakers, such as Boric Mitic’s Pretty Diana or Zelimir Zilnik’s Kenedi Goes Back Home. The protagonists’ language and attitude frequently send audiences into rapturous laughter. This may seem paradoxical or dubious, but it helps to make these films popular. If they were not funny, they would most probably end up being ignored, much like the people they portray. …

Conspiracy of Silence, a documentary listed for viewing in TV Guide Magazine was to be aired on the Discovery Channel, on May 3 1994. This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies. Many children suffered the indignity of wearing nothing but their underwear and a number displayed on a piece of cardboard hanging from their necks when being auctioned off to foreigners in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Toronto, Canada.

At the last minute before airing, unknown congressmen threatened the TV Cable industry with restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired. Almost immediately, the rights to the documentary were purchased by unknown persons who ordered all copies destroyed.

A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp who made it available to retired FBI Agent Ted L. Gunderson. While the video quality is not top grade, this tape is a blockbuster in what is revealed by its participants involved.

You may have heard of Rwanda but this movie tells you the story of one of the true heroes of the war, General Romeo Dellaire and why he is so upset at the United Nations whom he served.

Between April and June 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in 100 days. Most of the dead were Tutsis by the hands of the Hutus. The genocide began when Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana’s plane was shot down above Kigali airport on April 6, 1994.

Canadian Armed Forces General Romeo Dallaire was put in charge of a United Nations peacekeeping force during this 1994 genocide. His proposal called for 5,000 soldiers to permit orderly elections and the return of the refugees. The soldiers were never supplied and the killing began.

The documentary tells the story of the now-retired Lieutenant-General Dallaire, and shows his return to Rwanda after ten years. It features interviews with Stephen Lewis and BBC reporter Mark Doyle, among others.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

This special two-hour documentary marks the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide–a state sponsored massacre in which some 800,000 Rwandans were methodically hunted down and murdered by Hutu extremists. The program examines the social, political, and diplomatic failure that converged to enable the genocide to occur. “Ghosts of Rwanda” presents ground-breaking, first hand accounts of the genocide from those who lived it.

Rwanda was supposed to be easy.

Thirteen years ago, when the United Nations sent peacekeepers to this small, Central African nation — with the full support of the U.S. government — most of the policy-makers involved believed it would be a straightforward mission that would help restore the U.N.’s battered reputation after failures in Bosnia and Somalia. Few could imagine that, a decade later, Rwanda would be the crisis that still haunts their souls.

“Ghosts of Rwanda,” a special two-hour documentary to mark the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide — a state-sponsored massacre in which some 800,000 Rwandans were methodically hunted down and murdered by Hutu extremists as the U.S. and international community refused to intervene — examines the social, political, and diplomatic failures that converged to enable the genocide to occur.

“With the perspective of time, the Rwandan crisis can be seen as a crucial test of the international system and its values — a clash between the ideals of humanitarianism and the cold logic of realism and national interest,” says Frontline producer Greg Barker.

Through interviews with key government officials, diplomats, soldiers, and survivors of the slaughter, “Ghosts of Rwanda” presents groundbreaking, first-hand accounts of the genocide from those who lived it: the diplomats on the scene who thought they were building peace only to see their colleagues murdered; the Tutsi survivors who recount the horror of seeing their friends and family slaughtered by Hutu friends and co-workers; and the U.N. peacekeepers in Rwanda who were ordered not to intervene in the massacre happening all around them. The documentary features interviews with Canadian Gen. Romeo Dallaire, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and former National Security Adviser Anthony Lake as well as haunting interviews with the Hutu killers themselves, and a powerful interview with BBC journalist Fergal Keane who travelled through Rwanda as the genocide was drawing to a close.

“Outfoxed” exposes the politically biased slant of the Fox News Network by analysis, disclosure of internal memos and interviews of inside sources. This piece is important in understanding the overt tactics by the media to shape our opinions.

“Outfoxed” examines whether and how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch?s Fox News, have an active campaign to misinform people for personal gain. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public?s right to know.

Robert Greenwald?s film explores Murdoch?s burgeoning kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is controlled by one person. Media experts, including Jeff Cohen (FAIR) Bob McChesney (Free Press), Chellie Pingree (Common Cause), Jeff Chester (Center for Digital Democracy) and David Brock (Media Matters) provide context and guidance for the story of Fox News and its effect on society.

This documentary also reveals the secrets of Former Fox news producers, reporters, bookers and writers who expose what it?s like to work for Fox News. These former Fox employees talk about how they were forced to push a “right-wing” point of view or risk their jobs. Some have even chosen to remain anonymous in order to protect their current livelihoods. As one employee said “There?s no sense of integrity as far as having a line that can?t be crossed.”

Discover a war which few have heard of; a war in which the rebels are ruthless murderers of civilians yet are hard to hate. This is because they are only children.

In the spring of 2003, three young Americans traveled to Africa in search of such as story. What they found was a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them. A story where children are weapons and children are the victims. The “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” film exposes the effects of a 20 year-long war on the children of Northern Uganda. These children live in fear of abduction by rebel soldiers, and are being forced to fight as a part of violent army.

Director Robert Kane Pappas? “Orwell Rolls Over In His Grave” is the consummate critical examination of the Fourth Estate, once the bastion of American democracy. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, Pappas explores what the media doesn’t like to talk about: itself.

Meticulously tracing the process by which media has distorted and often dismissed actual news events, Pappas presents a riveting and eloquent mix of media professionals and leading intellectual voices on the media.

Among the cast of characters in “Orwell Rolls Over In His Grave” are Charles Lewis, director of the Center for Public Integrity, Vincent Bugliosi, former L.A. prosecutor and legal scholar, film director and author Michael Moore, Rep. Bernie Sanders, Danny Schecter, author and former producer for ABC and CNN, and Tony Benn, former member of the British Parliament.

“Orwell Rolls Over In His Grave” expresses ideas that will never be heard in mainstream media. From Globalvision?s Danny Schecter: ?We falsely think of our country as a democracy when it has evolved into a `mediacracy’, where a media that is supposed to check political abuse is part of the political abuse. New York University media professor Mark Crispin Miller says, These commercial entities now vie with the government for control over our lives. They are not a healthy counterweight to government.

Joseph Goebbels, former head of Nazi propaganda, said that what you want in a media system- he meant the Nazi media system – is to present the ostensible diversity that conceals an actual uniformity. From the very size of the media monopolies and how they got that way to who decides what gets on the air and what doesn’t, “Orwell Rolls Over In His Grave” moves through a troubling list of questions and news stories that go unanswered and unreported in the mainstream media.

Are Americans being given the information a democracy needs to survive or have they been electronically lobotomized? Has the frenzy for media consolidation led to a dangerous irony where in an era of more news sources the majority of the population has actually become less informed? Orwell Rolls Over In His Grave reminds us that 1984 is no longer a date in the future.
